Zhanaozen ( Kazakh Жаңаөзен ; Russian Жанаозен Zhanaozen ) is a city in the region Mangghystau in western Kazakhstan with 81,157 inhabitants (2020).
Geographical location
Schangaösen is located on the large Mangyschlak peninsula in western Kazakhstan, 150 km from the provincial capital Aktau .
history
The city was founded in 1968 as Novy Usen (Новый Узень).
The city was the subject of reports in June 1989, when unemployment, which had risen sharply as a result of the economic crisis in the last years of the Soviet Union, triggered violent unrest. According to party officials, they started out as youth rioters who wanted to take control of public institutions, and they continued - as in some cities in Uzbekistan - with attacks against ethnic minorities. After several deaths, 700 Transcaucasians from Armenia , Azerbaijan and Georgia were evacuated from Novy Usen.
In 1992 the Kazakh form of the city name Shangaosen and its Russian transcription Shanaosen became official. They represent the translation of the earlier Russian name: shanga in Kazakh and nowy in Russian mean new ; usen , Kazakh osen is a Turkish word for river .
In the wake of strikes and protests by workers in the oil and gas industry in Kazakhstan, there were violent clashes between demonstrators and the police on December 16, 2011, which culminated in the Shangaosen massacre . According to official information, 11 died, up to 70 people, according to the opposition, and around 90 other people were injured. In response, Kazakh President imposed Nursultan Nazarbaev the State of Emergency and a nighttime curfew on the city. Both were repealed on January 31, 2012.
