Fort Shevchenko ( Kazakh and Russian Форт-Шевченко ) is a port city on the Caspian Sea in the Mangghystau region in Kazakhstan with 6700 inhabitants (2020).

It is located on the westernmost tip of the Mangyschlak peninsula , Cape Tjub Karagan .

history

The city was founded in 1846 as the Novopetrovskoye Fortress ( Новопетровское ). In 1857 it was renamed Fort-Aleksandrowskij ( Форт-Александровский ). From 1850 to 1857 Taras Shevchenko (Ševčenko) was imprisoned in the fortress, which was renamed Fort Shevchenko after him in 1939 .

In 1899 the fortress and the surrounding settlement were granted city rights. On May 21, 1919 the naval battle of Fort Alexandrowsk took place in and in front of the harbor between units of the British Caspian Flotilla and the Caspian Flotilla , in which several ships and boats of the Red Workers 'and Peasants' Fleet were sunk or severely damaged.

The economy is dominated by fishing.
