The Mangghystau region ( Kazakh. Маңғыстау облысы / Mañğıstaw oblısı ; Russian Мангистауская область ) is one of 14 regions into which the Republic of Kazakhstan is divided. It is only sparsely populated, but has an area of over 165,000 km².

Geographical location
Mangghystau is located in western Kazakhstan and borders the Caspian Sea in the west, the Republic of Turkmenistan in the south, the Republic of Uzbekistan in the east and the Kazakh regions of Atyrau and Aqtöbe in the north .
In terms of landscape, it includes the Kazakh part of the desert-like Ustyurt plateau , the Mangyschlak peninsula with the Mangistau Mountains, which protrudes far into the Caspian Sea , and the Busachi peninsula, which is covered by salt marshes .

The climate in the Mangghystau area is extremely continental. Average temperature in January from −4 ° C to −9 ° C and in July from +25 ° C to +29 ° C. Annual precipitation values are 100–150 mm.
Flora and fauna
The state nature reserve "Ustyurt" is home to 263 plant species and diverse animal species. Rare birds include flamingos, tatar falcons, peregrine falcons, vultures and eagle owls. Among the mammals living here are the Ustyurt mouflon, the Persian gazelle, the desert lynx, the steppe cat, the steppe iltis, the barchan cat and the cheetah.
population
As of December 1, 2006, the Mangghystau area was home to around 373,400 people, which is 2.4% of the total population of the state. The urban population is approximately 283,200 people or 75.9%. The population density is 2.2 people per km² (for comparison: Kazakhstan total 5.57 people per km²).
More than 90 nationalities live in the area, 74% of them Kazakhs and 17% Russians .

Administrative division
The area is divided into seven districts ( Kazakh Ауданы Audany ; Russian Район Rajon ). The two cities of Aqtau and Schangaösen each represent their own urban district. In the Mangghystau area there is another city in addition to Aktau and Schangaösen: Fort Shevchenko .
