The Turkistan region ( Kazakh Түркістан облысы ; Russian Туркестанская область ) is the southernmost oblys ( region ) of Kazakhstan . The capital is Turkistan . With 116,902 km² it is the second smallest area in the country, with around two million inhabitants the second largest in terms of population.
geography
Turkistan borders Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in the south . Adjacent areas are in the west Kyzylorda , in northern Karaganda and East Zhambyl . The southern half is crossed by the Syr Darya.
history
Türkistan emerged from the southern Kazakhstan area on June 19, 2018 , when its capital Shymkent was spun off and elevated to a city with special status. The remaining area was renamed Turkistan after the new capital.
