The Western Kazakhstan region ( Kazakh Батыс Қазақстан облысы / Batys Qasaqstan oblyssy ; Russian Западно-Казахстанская область / Sapadno-Kazakhstan -western Republic) is one of the fourteen western provinces of the Kazakhstan region and is located in the westernmost province of Kazakhstan . Akim ( governor ) is Ghali Jesqalijew . The area was formed on March 10, 1932.
Western Kazakhstan has an area of 151,300 km² and around 657,000 inhabitants (2020). The capital is Oral (Russian Uralsk) in the north.
It is bordered by the Aqtöbe region to the east and the Atyrau region to the south, and Russia to the north and west . The main river crossing the area is the Urals . The western and larger part of the area is thus in Europe .
The western Kazakhstan area is mainly covered by semi-deserts and deserts in the west and steppes in the east. A narrow strip of territory along the Russian border is used for wheat cultivation .
The area is divided into 13 districts ( Kazakh Ауданы Audany ; Russian Район Rajon ). The Oral administrative center represents its own urban district. In addition to Oral, there is Aqsai , another place with the status of a city in Western Kazakhstan.
