Tschapajew ( Kazakh and Russian Чапаев ; until 1992 Чапаево Tschapajewo ) is a place in Kazakhstan .

geography

Chapayev is located in western Kazakhstan around 120 kilometers south of Oral and around 350 kilometers north of Atyrau . The place is located on the right bank of the Urals and thus in the European part of the country. Chapayev is the administrative center of Audany Aqschajyq in Western Kazakhstan .

history

The place was established as a fortress on the Urals River to prevent Kazakhs from crossing the river and attacking Russian territory. Originally the village was called Lbishchensky (Лбищенский). In 1899 Lbishchensky was renamed a district town in the Urals Oblast of the Russian Empire and in Lbishchensk (Лбищенск). As a result, two schools and two new small churches were built; a post office and a telegraph office were already in place . The population engaged in fishing, cattle breeding, hunting and collecting liquorice roots .

On September 5, 1919, Vasily Chapayev fell in the fighting for the city against the White Army . In his honor, the city was renamed Tschapajewo (Чапаево) in 1939. In 1971 the place received city rights. After Kazakhstan's independence, the name was changed to Chapayev in 1992 and the city's status was downgraded to a settlement in 1996.
