The Atyrau region ( Kazakh Атырау облысы / Atyrau oblysy , Russian Атырауская область / Atyrauskaja oblast ) is one of the 14 regions of Kazakhstan and is located in the west of the country. It has an area of around 118,600 km² and 645,000 inhabitants. On February 21, 1992, Gurjew (Russian name of its capital), as the area has been called since its foundation in 1938, was renamed Atyrau .
geography
Geographical location
The area borders on the administrative areas of Western Kazakhstan in the north, Aqtöbe in the east and Mangghystau in the extreme south, as well as the Caspian Sea in the southwest and Russia in the west. The capital is the city of Atyrau at the mouth of the Urals and the Caspian Sea. The western part of the area is therefore in Europe.
The Atyrau area essentially comprises the Caspian Depression . It is mainly covered with sandy desert (especially in the west) and other types of desert.
On the northeast coast of the Caspian Sea, east of Atyrau , are the rich oil fields of Tengiz and the Emba fields near the mouth of the Emba River . This southern district is mostly swampy as the Caspian Sea fluctuates water levels.
Flora and fauna
The Atyrau area is rich in wildlife. There are 39 types of mammals: In addition to the common rodents, there are many predators, including wolf , steppe fox , wild cat and weasel , as well as ungulates such as the Persian goitered gazelle and the saiga . There are otters , rat snakes , adders , lizards and amphibians . There are 53 species of marine fish and 42 species of river fish, as well as migratory and semi-migratory species. Caspian fish are sturgeon , scherg , salmon and white salmon . There are catfish , carp , pike and pikeperch in the rivers . The white carp and the white Amur have "immigrated" from the Far East . The Caspian seal lives in the Caspian Sea and has adapted excellently to local conditions. Seals migrate south in the spring and stay in the deeper and colder waters of the Caspian Sea during the summer. They often form large colonies consisting of tens of thousands of animals in winter.
The area is particularly rich in birds - there are 230 species, including rare and critically endangered species.
