Imanghali Nurghaliuly Tasmaghambetow ( Kazakh Иманғали Нұрғалиұлы Тасмағамбетов ; Russian Имангали Нургалиевич Тасмагалиевич Тасмагамиевич Тасмагамамбетов / Imangitschi Nurgalie , December 9, 1955 ) is a politician from Kazakhstan . From 2002 to 2003 he was Prime Minister of his country.

Life

After studying in Uralsk , he initially worked as a teacher and from the late 1970s to 1991 held various positions in the Komsomol , the youth organization of the CPSU . After Kazakhstan gained independence, he held various positions as minister and advisor to President Nursultan Nazarbayev in the 1990s .

From January 28, 2002 to June 11, 2003 he was the prime minister of the country as the successor to Qassym-Shomart Toqayev . After the failure of the land reform law, he was replaced by Daniyal Akhmetov . From December 9, 2004 to April 3, 2008 Tasmaghambetov was mayor of the former Kazakh capital of Almaty . On April 4, 2008, he became mayor of the Kazakh capital, Astana .

On October 22, 2014, he became Minister of Defense of Kazakhstan. He held this post for around two years before he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in the Saghyntayev cabinet on September 13, 2016 .

On February 3, 2017, Tasmaghambetov was dismissed from the post of Deputy Prime Minister and instead appointed Kazakh ambassador to Russia. If he was previously considered an influential and possible successor to the authoritarian President Nursultan Nazarbayev, this step was seen as a sign that Nazarbayev dropped him as a potential successor.
