Nurlan Bajusaquly Jermekbajew ( Kazakh Нұрлан Байұзақұлы Ермекбаев , Russian Нурлан Байузакович Ермекбаев Nurlan Bajusakowitsch Jermekbajew * 1. January 1963 in Chimkent , Kazakh SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Kazakh diplomat and politician . He has been Kazakhstan's Defense Minister since August 2018 .

biography

Nurlan Yermekbayev was born in Chimkent in 1963 . In 1981 he was drafted into the Soviet armed forces for military service. He began studying at the Defense Ministry's Military Institute. Between 1984 and 1985 he was stationed in Angola as a military advisor . In 1986 he graduated from the Military Institute. He then served in the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union until 1991 .

In the following years, Yermekbayev worked in business and was, among other things, in an advisory capacity at ATFBank and head of the Beijing office of Halyk Bank . In 2001 he acted for the first time as an advisor to the Embassy of Kazakhstan in China, before representing the Republic of Kazakhstan in Singapore in 2003 as Chargé d'affaires . After two years in this post, he returned to Kazakhstan in 2004, where he headed the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration. In addition to this office, he was also an advisor to Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev from 2006 to 2007 . In 2007 Yermekbaev was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister. From 2010 to 2012 he was assistant to the Kazakh President.

From April 2012 to November 2014 Nurlan Yermekbayev was Kazakhstan's Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the People's Republic of China and also to North Korea and Vietnam . Since November 19, 2014, he has been an adviser to the Kazakh President and Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan. After the attacks in Aqtöbe and Almaty , the new Ministry for Religious Affairs and Civil Society was created, which Nazarbayev entrusted Yermekbayev with on September 13, 2016. On April 4, 2018, he was dismissed from the post of minister and instead appointed Assistant to the President of Kazakhstan and Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Yermekbayev has been Kazakhstan's Defense Minister since August 7, 2018 .
