Saghadat Qoschachmetuly Nurmaghambetow ( Kazakh Сағадат Қожахметұлы Нұрмағамбетов , Russian Сагадат Кожахметович Нурмагамбетов * 25. May 1924 in Jengbek, Turkestan ASSR ; † 24. September 2013 in Almaty , Kazakhstan ) was a Kazakh army general .

Life

Saghadat Nurmaghambetow was born in 1924 in the village of Jengbek in the Turkestan ASSR . He joined the Red Army in 1942 and received training at the machine gun school in Kushka in the Turkmen SSR . In April 1943 he was sent to war on the Eastern Front and fought in the Northern Caucasus , on the 4th Ukrainian Front and the 1st Belarusian Front during World War II . His unit was part of the 5th Shock Army of the Soviet Armed Forces, which took part in the Vistula-Oder Operation and the Battle of Berlin . On February 27, 1945 Nurmaghambetov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

After the war he studied from June 1946 to November 1949 at the Frunze Military Academy in Moscow . After graduating, he was commandant of an infantry regiment and inspector of the leadership of military schools. From 1951 he worked in the headquarters of the Central Asian military district of Turkestan and from 1954 he was in command of a motorized guard rifle regiment. Between 1958 and 1961 he was then chief of staff of the motorized guards rifle regiment and in 1962 he was appointed chief of staff of civil defense of the Kazakh SSR . From 1969 to 1981 and again between 1984 and 1989 he was deputy commandant of the troops in the Central Asian Military District. After the dissolution of this military district, he became chairman of the Kazakh Veterans Council.

In October 1991 Nurmaghambetov was appointed chairman of the State Defense Committee. In May 1992 he became the first defense minister of independent Kazakhstan in the cabinet of Sergei Tereshchenko . In October 1995 he was replaced by Älibek Qassymov as Minister of Defense and in November he retired from active military service.

Saghadat Nurmaghambetov died on September 24, 2013 in Almaty. He was buried next to his wife in the Kensai Cemetery.
