Serhetabat , Russian Серхетабад Serchetabad (formerly Turkmen Guşgy , Russian Кушка Kuschka , Kuschk, Kushka ) is a city in Turkmenistan on the banks of the Kushka . The city lies on the border with Afghanistan , on the other side of the border is the city of Towraghondi , which is connected to Serhetabat by rail.
history
In March 1885, the battle for Kushka , also known as the Panjdeh incident, broke out near where we are today . The troops of the Russian Empire under General Alexander Komarov defeated the troops of the emirate of Afghanistan. As a result of the Russian victory, the former Afghan region around today's Serhetabat was occupied by Russian forces. In 1890 the settlement was founded as a Kuschka military outpost . On March 1, 1901, a regional railway line of the Trans Caspian Railway from Mary to Serhetabat opened, causing international excitement.
Serhetabat was the southernmost point of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union . A ten-meter-high stone cross, which was erected on the occasion of the three hundredth anniversary of the Romanov noble family , commemorates this.
traffic
In addition to the line to Mary, a broad-gauge railway of the former Soviet railway network runs from Serhetabat to Towraghondi in Afghanistan. The line was built in 1960 and put back into operation in 2007.
