The Murray Island (in the UK Bluff Iceland ) is a 10km long island off the Danco Coast of Graham Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located on the southwest side of Hughes Bay .
The island was already known to whalers who hunted in these waters since the 1820s. However, it was always shown connected to the mainland on maps. It was not until 1922 that the voyage of the polling ship Graham through the channel between the mainland coast and the island revealed the real nature of this geographic object. The island is named in connection with Cape Murray after the British marine zoologist and oceanographer John Murray (1841-1914), a vehement proponent of research in Antarctica. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1960 based on the original name Bluff Point for Cape Murray.
