The Hughes Bay ( English Hughes Bay or Hughes Gulf ) is an up to 42 km wide bay on the Danco coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . Between Cape Murray and Cape Sterneck on Gerlache Street . The Brialmont Bay in the northeast and the Salvesen Cove in the southwest are their two biggest side bays.
The American seal hunter John Davis was said to be the first person to set foot on the Antarctic mainland in Hughes Bay on February 7, 1821. Today's historians doubt his information. The name goes back to James Hoseason , first mate of the Sprightley of the London whaling company Samuel Enderby & Sons , who operated in the area between 1824 and 1825. Hoseason named her after Edward Hughes , the ship's captain.
