The apéndice Island ( Spanish Islote apéndice translated: appendicitis island ; in the UK Sterneck Iceland ; in Chile Isla Rivera ) is an island off the west coast of Graham lands north of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is northwest of Charles Point in Hughes Bay . During the Antarctic summer months, the island is ice-free and covered with mosses and lichens .
The name of the island is first recorded on official Argentine maps from 1957. The naming is descriptive, since the shape of the island is reminiscent of that of an appendix. The namesake of the alternative names are the Austrian geophysicist and geodesist Robert Daublebsky von Sterneck (1839-1910) and Carlos Rivera, radio operator on the 1st Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1946-1947).
