Tengiz ( Russian Тенгиз , Kazakh Теңіз ) is an oil field in the Atyrau region in western Kazakhstan . It was discovered in 1979 and originally contained about 26 billion barrels of petroleum , of which 6-9 billion barrels can be extracted economically. This makes it one of the largest oil fields in this region. In 2009 around 540,000 barrels of oil were produced daily.

operator

Tengiz is operated by Tengizchevroil (TCO), a joint venture between Chevron Corporation (50 percent), ExxonMobil (25 percent), KazMunayGas (20 percent) and LukArco (5 percent). BP bought the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) in 2000 , with which BP owned 46 percent of the shares in LukArco. In December 2009, BP sold its stake in Lukoil for $ 1.6 billion. Lukoil thus became the sole owner of LukArco and its 5 percent in Tengizchevroil.

advancement

Location of the oil and gas fields Kashagan ("Кашаган", in the Caspian Sea) and Tengiz ("Тенгиз", on land).

The Tengiz oil reserves extend over an area of 19 km wide and 21 km long. Tengiz is located in a 2,500 km² license area of Tengizchevroil, in which there are other significant oil deposits, including the Korolev oil field with additional reserves of 1.5 billion barrels. Despite these findings, further oil deposits are being sought. Only 130 kilometers from Tengiz is the even larger Kashagan oil field .

The oil quality of the fields in this region is very poor. The high sulfur content reduces the profitability of the production, as the sulfur has to be separated from the oil in a laborious process. This produces 4,500 tons of sulfur every day , some of which is carried to nearby cities by the wind. The residents therefore complain of health problems such as respiratory problems or eye diseases.

In 2018, 28.6 million tons of crude oil (228.2 million barrels) were produced in Tengiz, almost a third of Kazakhstan's total oil production. Despite unexpectedly strong increases in production from the problematic Kashagan field (January to November 2018: 12 million tons) as well as the production of crude oil (January to November: 11.1 million tons) and gas condensate from the extremely large Karachaganak gas field , Tengiz is the most important oil field Kazakhstan.

In 2018, Tengizchevroil also sold 1.3 million tons of liquefied natural gas from Tengiz. In addition, there were 9.2 billion cubic meters of conventional natural gas and 2.5 million tons of sulfur .

Tengizchevroil also approved the Future Growth Wellhead Pressure Management Project (FGP-WPMP), another major investment that will increase Tengiz oil production by an additional 12 million tons annually to 39 million tons (850,000 barrels daily).

1985 Tengiz disaster

On June 23, 1985, there was a blowout at borehole No. 37 in the Tengiz field with the world's largest gas and oil fountain, which could only be finally stopped after 400 days and with enormous technical and personnel effort.
