The Atlantic Richfield Company (abbreviated ARCO ) is an American oil company. Today ARCO operates around 800 gas stations in the southwest of the USA ( California , Nevada and Arizona ).

From 2000 to 2013 ARCO was a subsidiary of BP ( BP West Coast Products LLC ). 2013 BP sold ARCO including the oil refinery in Carson (California) for 2.4 billion US dollars at the Tesoro .

history

In 1866, Atlantic Refining was founded by Charles Lockhart in Philadelphia . In 1870, Atlantic Refining was already producing 3,000  barrels a day and was one of the largest oil producers in the USA. In 1874 John D. Rockefeller bought Atlantic. It is now part of the Standard Oil Trust. Tesoro Corporation The Sherman Antitrust Act smashed the Standard Oil Company in 1911, thereby undermining the monopoly of the Rockefellers Trust. Atlantic Refining became independent again.

Atlantic opened its first petrol station in 1915 and from that point on was no longer just a sponsor, but also a service provider. During the Second World War , the Atlantic Refining Company was the leading supplier with a twenty percent share of the kerosene supplies for the US Air Force. From 1952, Atlantic was one of the first companies to produce offshore in the Gulf. In 1963, Atlantic Refining bought Hondo Oil .

In 1966 a new company name (company) ARCO was formed. The occasion was the merger of Atlantic Refining and the Richfield Company (also an oil company). In 1969 ARCO took over Sinclair Oil Corporation and produced 300,000 barrels per day. In 1972 ARCO relocated its headquarters from Philadelphia to Los Angeles . In 1977 ARCO merged with Anaconda Aluminums Corporation. From now on, the group was also active in the metal industry.
