KazMunayGas (KMG) ( Kazakh ҚазМұнайГаз , German transcription QasMunaiGas ; Russian КазМунайГаз ) is a company from Kazakhstan with headquarters in Nur-Sultan . It is listed on the Kazakh Stock Exchange . 100 percent of the shares are owned by the Kazakh state company Samruk-Kazyna . According to the company, around 70,000 people are employed at KMG. The petroleum company's turnover in the 2019 financial year was around eight trillion tenge .
history
The company was founded on February 20, 2002 by decision of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev . It was created through the merger of the two state-owned companies National oil and gas company Kazakhoil and NC Transport of Oil and Gas. Initially, the state-owned company provided funding in accordance with agreements with neighboring Russia in the north of the Caspian Sea. After further agreements with Russia and the People's Republic of China , the construction of pipelines was pushed ahead.
In August 2007 the company acquired 75 percent of the shares in the Romanian oil supplier Rompetrol for around 3.6 billion dollars.
At the end of 2009, the company and the China National Petroleum Corporation acquired 100 percent of the shares in the Kazakh mineral oil company Mangghystaumunaigas .
During demonstrations by workers of the oil field in Shangaosen for better working conditions, the Shangaosen massacre broke out on December 16, 2011 , in which at least 14 people were killed.

The KazMunayGas group includes the companies KazTransOil , KazTransGas and KazRosGas in the petroleum industry . The subsidiary KazMunayGas Exploration Production is the largest listed company in Kazakhstan; it is listed in the KASE index .
The shipping company Kazmortransflot is also part of KMG. KazMunayTengiz is the company that operates on the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea . Telecommunications company KazTransCom is also owned by KazMunayGas. The group's products are distributed by the petrol station operator KazMunayGas Önimderi .

Projects
The company's largest project is the Kashagan oil field near Atyrau , which was only discovered in 2000 . Oil production is to begin between 2012 and 2014. In addition to KazMunayGas (share: 16.81%), international corporations are also involved in this project. They include Eni (share: 16.81%), Royal Dutch Shell (share: 16.81%), Total (share: 16.81%), ConocoPhillips (share: 8.4%) and INPEX (share: 7 , 56%).
Other major projects include the oil fields Tengiz and Karachaganak . KazMunayGas also operates several smaller oil and gas fields on the Caspian Sea and mainland Kazakhstan.
