INPEX ( Japanese 国際 石油 開 発 帝 石 株式会社 , Kokusai Sekiyu Kaihatsu Teiseki Kabushiki kaisha , German "Internationale Erdölexploration Teiseki", English INternational Petroleum EXploration Corporation ) is a Japanese company with headquarters in Akasaka , Minato , Tokyo .

The forerunner company was founded in 1966 as Kita-Sumatra Kaiyō Sekiyu Shigen Kaihatsu KK ( 北 ス マ ト ラ 海洋 石油 資源 開 発 株式会社 , German "North Sumatra Sea Oil Well Exploration", English North Sumatra Offshore Petroleum Exploration ). From 2001 it was called INPEX. In 2006 INPEX acquired the Japanese mineral oil company Teikoku Sekiyu KK ( 帝国石油 株式会社 ; short: Teiseki , German “Kaiserreich-Erdöl”, English Teikoku Oil ). The holding company initially set up for this purpose took on the name INPEX again in 2008 when the two companies finally merged.

INPEX is run as Kabushiki kaisha and is active in the production and trading of oil and natural gas . The largest shareholder is the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry , which holds 18.96% of the shares.

Ichthys project

Under the leadership of INPEX involving total is Ichthys LNG project developed. The gas field is 220 km off the coast of Western Australia . The natural gas produced in a liquefaction plant to near Darwin in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and LPG to be separated and exported. Production is expected to start in 2017 with an annual production of 8.9 million t of LNG and 1.6 million t of LPG.
