Atyrau ( Kazakh / Russian Атырау / Atıraw, [ ɑtɪˈɾaw ] ; until 1991 Гурьев Gurjew ) is a port city in Kazakhstan . It is the capital of the Atyrau region of the same name .

Geographical location
The city is located in the north-western part of Kazakhstan on the Ural River , 45 km from the northern shore of the Caspian Sea . Its geographic coordinates are 47.12 ° N and 51.88 ° E.
According to the usual definition of the borders of Europe, Atyrau lies partly in Asia and in Europe . The Ural River divides Atyrau into a European and an Asian district. The city is roughly equally on European and Asian territory. While Atyrau airport is on European soil, the city's two train stations are therefore already on Asian territory.

The population of Atyrau is around 146,400 (2005). The Atyrau district , which also includes other, smaller communities, had 201,924 inhabitants on October 1, 2005.

The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Administratur Atyrau .
history
Atyrau was founded in 1640 by the Gurjew brothers, Russian merchants. The settlement was called Jaizk ( Nizhny Jaizk ) until 1708 . It was later named Guryev after its founders until it was given its current name after Kazakhstan's independence.
economy
Important branches of industry are petroleum processing (including Embamunaigas ) and the chemical industry , as well as mechanical engineering , fishing and meat processing. The headquarters of the Tengizchevroil mineral oil company , the largest in Kazakhstan in terms of oil production, is located in the city . Atyrau has a river port .

Trunk roads
The European route 40 runs through Atyrau and the northward A28 ( European route 121 ) connects the city with Uralsk .
Airport
Atyrau International Airport is seven kilometers west of the city .
railroad
Atyrau is located on the international broad-gauge railway line from Astrakhan on the Volga to Orsk in Siberia . Lines to Tashkent in Uzbekistan and Almaty branch off from this route .
Education and culture
Atyrau is the seat of the University of Atyrau and various universities. There are several museums to visit, and the city also has a theater, a philharmonic hall, two cinemas and 84 libraries.
The Asyk memorial, a simple monumental sculpture of an Asyk, a traditional game piece for Go made from the kneecap of a mutton, is considered an innovative event for Kazakhstan . It was set up in 2001 by the contemporary sculptor Saken Narynov on his own initiative in a square in Atyrau. However, a year later it was dismantled in favor of an equestrian statue.
Sports
The city is home to the football club FK Atyrau , which won the cup in 2009, and the ice hockey team HK Beibarys Atyrau . The basketball team BK Barsy Atyrau plays in the Kazakh National League.
