The FK Atyrau ( Kazakh : Атырау Футбол Клубы, Russian Атырау футбольный клуб ) is a Kazakh football club from the city of Atyrau in western Kazakhstan .
history
Name development
The association was founded in 1978 under the name Prikaspijez Gurjew (Прикаспиец Гурьев). In 2000 it was renamed FK Atyrau (ФК Атырау).
Soviet championship
In the first two years after it was founded, the club only took part in the regional championship. In 1980 the team was included in the third highest Soviet league. After two disappointing seasons, the club was dissolved again in 1981.
Kazakh championship
In 2000 the club was reactivated in the Kazakh second division . The club has played in the Kazakh premier league since 2001 . Two times in 2001 with eleven points on Schenis Astana and in 2002 with eight points behind Irtysh Pavlodar , the runner-up was won. In the following three seasons, the team slipped into mediocrity. In the years 2006 to 2008, FK Atyrau played to remain in the top Kazakh league. In the 2009 season, the team won sixth place. In the same year, the first national cup win was celebrated when Shakhtar Qaraghandy was defeated 1-0 in the final in the capital Astana Arena .
Stadion
The club plays its home games in the 8,690-seat Munaischy Stadium , which was built in 1954.
European Cup balance sheet
The club took part in qualifying for the 2002/03 UEFA Cup . In the first round, the team was eliminated against the Slovakian Matador Púchov after 0: 0 and 0: 2. The following season, the team were also knocked out in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup first qualifying round by Levski Sofia of Bulgaria after 4-1 and 2-0. The third appearance on the European stage ended unsuccessfully for the club from Atyrau when both games were lost against the Hungarian opponent Győri ETO FC .
