Timur Nuruachitowitsch Bekmambetov ( Russian Тимур Нуруахитович Бекмамбетов , scientific transliteration Timur Nuruachitovič Bekmambetov ; born June 25, 1961 in Gurjew , Kazakh Socialist Soviet Republic ) is a Kazakh film producer and director .

Life

His father Nuruachit Bekmambetow ( Russian Нуруахит Бекмамбетов ) is a Kazakh and his mother Mira Bogoslowskaja ( Russian Мира Богословская ) is a Jew ( Ashkenazim ).

Bekmambetov made his living as a commercial filmmaker in the 1990s . He and a friend managed to raise $ 60,000 for his first feature film . Peshavar Waltz is about the Soviet war in Afghanistan . He then shot the cheap film Arena for American producer Roger Corman . Bekmambetov made his breakthrough with his third feature film Watcher of the Night - Nochnoi Dozor . The fantasy thriller is based on the novel of the same name by Russian bestselling author Sergei Lukjanenko . With the continuation Guardian of the Day - Dnevnoi Dozor , Bekmambetov surpassed the success of the first part. The film grossed over $ 30 million at the box office in Russia alone, setting a new record.
