Guardians of the Night - Nochnoi Dozor

Day Watch - Dnevnoi Dozor (also: Dnewnoj Dosor, Day Watch, Dnevnoy Dozor, Nochnoi Dozor 2 - Mel Sudby, russ . Дневной Дозор , Ночной Дозор 2 - Мел Судьбы ) is a Russian fantasy - action film from the year 2006 and the continuation from Guardians of the Night - Nochnoi Dozor . It is based on a series of novels by Sergei Lukianenko . The film was shown for the first time in Germany on February 16, 2007 as part of the Berlinale .

action

In Moscow , the year 2005 ends with New Year's Eve . The Other of Light, Anton Gorodetsky, trains Svetlana, who was recognized as another in Watcher of the Night - Nochnoi Dozor and is now being trained as a Great Other of Light, in the service of the Watcher of Night. On their routine trip through Moscow they come across a Dark Other who ambushes helpless old women and sucks out their vitality with a magic needle. In the hunt for the Dark Other, Svetlana follows the fugitive into the second level of twilight. When Svetlana pulls the mask from her attacker's face, Anton recognizes his son Yegor. He prevents Svetlana from arresting the boy and later steals the evidence, the mask, that could lead to Jegor's arrest.

Meanwhile, there is an increase in unregistered dark people in Moscow. Eventually, a Dark Other is found dead who has no wound on her body. Anton is suspected of killing her and is hunted by the dark, led by Zebulun. At the same time, the Inquisition carefully monitors the balance between light and darkness and is ready to intervene in the event of any offense.

Anton's boss, Boris Ignatjewitsch alias Geser , suspects that Anton is blamed for further murders by the Dark Guard. So he swaps Olga and Anton's bodies so that Anton can always get an alibi . This is to prevent Anton falling into another trap of the day guard. Unfortunately, this plan does not work, because the dark ones see through the body swap and lure Anton, who is in Olga's body, into a restaurant, in which another dark man is murdered. Svetlana wants to intervene and thus prevent an arrest or conviction of Anton, but Gesar explains to her that she is not allowed to do so. Anton was only the bait that was supposed to tempt Svetlana to attack the dark ones out of anger and thus to give the day watch a reason to liquidate Svetlana. Because she is a powerful magician who would finally secure the supremacy of the light forces in Moscow over the dark ones.

During the birthday of Yegor, Anton's son, Zebulun's plan culminates to make Yegor the Great Other of Darkness, who will upset the balance between light and darkness. During the fight between Yegor and Svetlana, the war between light and darkness begins, in which all of Moscow is destroyed. If it weren't for the ancient chalk of fate that once belonged to the great warrior Tamerlane and that can reverse history. Anton discovers that he must use the chalk to undo the point where his life went wrong.

He decides to write the word " нет " (German "No" ) on the kitchen wall of the house in which he had ordered the murder of his son Yegor by the witch Darja Schulz twelve years earlier while still in the womb of his wife. A flashback shows how Anton sees his chalk writing on the witch and decides against the attempted murder of his still unborn son. He leaves the apartment and meets Svetlana, his love from the future, whom he no longer knows, but speaks to her on the street in the rain and walks away with her, watched by Gesar and Zebulon, who are nearby on a bench sit.

background

Like Night Watchers - Nochnoi Dozor , the film was shot mostly in Moscow and St. Petersburg . Further recordings were made in Almaty , Kiev and in the Jamaican Lime Hall . Some of the scenes were shot before the release of the first feature film, because at that time there was snow and the captured scenes were needed for the dramaturgy, as the director announced at the 2007 Berlinale . Production costs are estimated at 4.2 million US dollars , which is only slightly above the budget that was available for the production of the first feature film.

Despite the title, the plot of the film is very generously based on the second and third stories from the book Guardians of the Night by Sergei Lukyanenko . The original title of the film was supposed to be Guardians of the Night 2: The Chalk of Fate ( Nochnoy dozor 2: Mel Sudby ), as evidenced by the trailer for the Turkish Gambit DVD from 2005. However, the film was renamed shortly before its theatrical release in Russia and ran there on January 1, 2006 at 3 am with the tagline “The first film of the year” . However, the credits still contain the subtitle Die Kreide des Schicksals ( Mel Sudby ). In addition, the end credits of the film show the names of the filmmakers on advertising signs and neon signs in the streets of Moscow , including most recently the likeness of director Timur Bekmambetov . On the same day the film was shown in Belarus , Ukraine and Kazakhstan . The international version of the film was presented to the audience at the Berlinale 2007 on February 16 and 17, 2007. According to the film producer Konstantin Ernst , this version is 18 minutes shorter than the Russian version. This was followed by other screenings at various international film festivals . From June 1, 2007, the film was shown in the United States. The cinema release in Germany was on September 20, 2007. On March 14, 2008, the film was released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment in Germany with an FSK-16 rating.

Just three weeks after its theatrical release, the film attracted over 6.3 million viewers to Russian cinemas and grossed 26 million US dollars in the first two weeks . The film set a new box office record. On the opening weekend, the film grossed over $ 46,000 in the US, with total US revenues of over $ 450,000. In Germany, almost 34,000 viewers were counted at the box office within the first four days.

For the opening scenes that take place in the Middle Ages of Asia, horses were trained to break through brick walls made of cardboard . In the scene in which Alissa brakes sharply in the red Mazda in the “Kosmos” hotel, so that the left front wheel comes to a stop just in front of the camera, the driver of the car rammed the right fender into one of the posts in the hall.

For the shooting of Jegor's final birthday party in the hotel "Kosmos", which in reality bears the same name, extras were invited, who were served a buffet as well as alcoholic beverages. An hour and a half after the start of the party, filming began to ensure the authenticity of the celebrating extras between the actors. In this scene, many Russian celebrities can be seen in cameo appearances as Dark Others . Among others, the artist Nikos Safronow , music critic Artemi Troitski , producer Jurij Eisenspieß , lead singer of the band Leningrad , Sergej Schnurow and singer Boris Moiseyev appear there . At this celebration Kostja's father wears a Bundeswehr sports undershirt . In a scene at Gorsvet's School of Bright Others, some Russian science fiction authors go to school, including the author of the book Sergei Lukyanenko , but also Vladimir Vasilyev , Oleg Diwow and Eduard Geworkjan .

Anton Gorodetsky gets on the Moscow Metro by jumping through the advertising poster for the film 9 Rota . This alludes to producers' willingness to beat the Russian box office record of 9 Rota , Fyodor Bondarchuk's war film . This scene was filmed late at night in Saint Petersburg , not on the Moscow Metro, when the station was already closed to the public.

Soundtrack

In contrast to Guardians of the Night - Nochnoi Dozor , a soundtrack was released for the second feature film . The publication took place in 2006 with the music label Real Records . The soundtrack contains 20 music tracks, the first half of which consists mainly of pop music and the second half of the soundtrack of the film music by Yuri Poteyenko . Almost every music title is introduced by a line of dialogue from the film. You can hear TT-34 and Verka Serduchka , among others .

criticism

Rainer Vogt from TV Digital wrote in issue 19 of September 7, 2007 that the film was a wild mix of romance, drama, action, fantasy, film noir , music video and video game. The dark Russian flair would be retained. Despite the intertwined romance, the film is not for the faint of heart.

According to the lexicon of international films , Guardian of the Day is a “bombastic blockbuster cinema that gives the genre a formally attractive dirty look”. On the other hand, the plausibility of the story and characters as well as a coherent dramaturgy are sacrificed to the overwhelming aesthetic, which is heavy on effects.

Deike Stagge from Filmstarts awarded four out of five points , as with Guardians of the Night - Nochnoi Dozor . According to Stagge's judgment, the film contains “two hours of fast-paced and well-cut entertainment” and is again “a firework of effects and artistically made slow-motion” . Stagge finds positive words for the cast and portrayal of the actors.

Annett Meiritz from Spiegel described the film as a "cabinet of abstruses [...] with entertaining carnage and crazy special effects" . The "two-hour marathon of mutant skirmishes and chases" awaits as a "fantasy mixture with an extra helping of feeling" .

Awards

At the Saturn Awards in the same year he received a nomination for best international film.

continuation

The filming of a third part is being planned as an American project, but there is currently no specific information about the time of the shooting or a planned start date. It is expected to be produced entirely by 20th Century Fox under the title Guardian of the Twilight .
