biography

Vladimir Menshov's Russian family came from Astrakhan . His father Valentin (1912–1974) worked for the NKVD secret service. In 1947 he had to move to Arkhangelsk in northern Russia for official reasons . Vladimir also went to school there until the family moved to Astrakhan in 1950. There he graduated from school with honors and then went to Moscow , where he wanted to study at the renowned Gerasimov Institute for Cinematography - also known as WGIK. However, he was initially insufficiently prepared for the entrance exams. He then went back to Astrakhan, worked in a factory for four years, and prepared for a new attempt. In 1961 he finally managed to take up acting studies at the Chekhov Art Theater School .

Over the years, however, Menshov increasingly neglected acting in favor of directing, for which he became more and more enthusiastic. So it happened that after graduating from drama school in 1965, he finally started studying at the WGIK as a prospective director; Getting to know the well-known director Michail Romm had made this possible. In 1970 he completed his studies and has since worked at well-known film studios such as Mosfilm and Lenfilm . He has worked as a director and screenwriter on several documentaries and feature films and began acting himself in the 1970s. Although his acting career encompassed far more films than his director and screenwriter career, Menschow saw acting himself merely as his hobby, in contrast to directing, which he saw as his main occupation.

Mensov's international breakthrough as a director came with the film Moscow Don't Believe Tears , which was shot from 1978 to 1979. Although this film did not always meet with positive criticism in the Soviet Union, it became a sensational box office success in over 100 countries and won the Oscar for best foreign language film of 1980. Menshov achieved another success in 1984 with Der Kurschatten (Lyubow i golubi) , who received the main prize at a film festival in Torremolinos, Spain . Mannow's most successful work as an actor is his participation in the film adaptation of the works of the Guardian novels . The film Guardian of the Night - Nochnoi Dozor (2004), in which Menshov plays one of the leading roles, has become one of the most internationally successful Russian film productions of recent times.

Menshov lived in Moscow and was under contract with the Mosfilm film studio . He was married to the actress Vera Alentova, who, among other things, had played in the film Moscow Believes In Tears . The two had a daughter named Julia (* 1969), who is also an actress and who played in the Chekhov Art Theater in the 1990s. Since 2003, Menshov was a member of the United Russia party .

Menshov died on July 5, 2021 as a result of a COVID-19 illness in the hospital in Moscow.
