The Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography , often called WGIK abbreviated ( Russian Всероссийский государственный институт кинематографии имени С.А.Герасимова, ВГИК ), is a state film school in Moscow .
history
The Institute for Cinematography was founded in 1919 by Vladimir Gardin as the Moscow Film School , making it the oldest film school in the world.
From 1934 to 1991 the institute was called the "State All-Union Institute for Cinematography" ( Russian Всесоюзный государственный институт кинематографии ). In 1986 it was also named after the Russian director and actor Sergei Gerasimow .
