Sergei Gerasimov ( Russian Сергей Аполлинариевич Герасимов ; born May 21, jul. / 3. June  1906 greg. In the village Kundrawy, Orenburg Governorate , Russian Empire , now Chelyabinsk Oblast , Russia ; † 26. November 1985 in Moscow ) was a Soviet film director , screenwriter and actor .

Life

Gerasimow studied at the Leningrad Art School and finished his studies at the Leningrad Institute of Dramatic Arts in 1928. Gerasimov made his film debut in 1926 and he appeared in seven films as an actor at Sovkino until the early 1930s . With the exception of The Man Who Lost His Memory (1929) by Friedrich Ermler , all of these silent films - including Der Mantel (1926), Das neue Babylon (1929) and Odna - Alone (1931) - were made with the directors Grigori Kosinzew and Leonid Trauberg and the cameraman Andrei Moskwin , with whom he had founded the avant-garde artist collective FEKS ( Factory of Eccentric Actors ) in 1922 . From 1930 Gerasimow directed and wrote scripts himself.

From the mid-1930s Gerasimow taught acting for Lenfilm Studios and used the young actors in his films. His student Tamara Makarova later became his wife and colleague, other important students of Gerassimov were Sergei Bondarchuk , his wife Inna Makarowa , Sergei Gurso , Lyudmila Schagalowa , Nonna Mordjukowa , Galina Polskich and Vjacheslav Tichonow .

Gerassimov's most important film work is the three-part series Derstille Don from 1957 based on the novel of the same name by Mikhail Scholochow . The film tells the story of the Don Cossacks in the war and civil war years from 1912 to 1922. In 1984 Gerasimov achieved another success with the film adaptation of Lev Tolstoy , the director himself took on the title role of the famous Russian writer .

The Moscow Institute of Cinematography is named after Sergei Gerasimov.
