The coat is a Soviet silent film that Grigori Kosinzew and Leonid Trauberg shot in 1926 based on the original of the same name (1842) by Nikolai Gogol .
action
The little clerk Akaki Akakiewitsch Baschmachkin, an office clerk by trade and without close social ties, is mocked by his colleagues. He is disappointed with life and lives in a very modest apartment. His greatest wish, a new coat, is denied for financial reasons. When he happened to witness a business agreement, he was bribed by the landowner Ptitsin and was finally able to order the coat he was longing for from the bespoke tailor. With this new gem, Akaki is not only looking forward to the longed-for social recognition, but also to the hoped-for professional advancement.
But soon all of his expectations are destroyed in just one night. On the way home from a party, Akaki is attacked and his coat with the wonderful fur collar that warms Akaki's neck is stolen. As quickly as the recognition came, he is now sidelined. The general social ostracism that plunges him into the abyss is followed by early death - the premature (and temporary) end of a botched life. But Akaki Bashmachkin's spirit soon returns and now begins to appear and take revenge on all those who had prepared hell on earth for him during his lifetime.
Production notes

Reviews
“They [Kosinzew and Trauberg] draw the threatening environment in an expressionist manner. The play of light and shadow, the loneliness of a snow-covered street isolate the hero, directly express his abandonment, his helplessness in a hostile environment. "
“Expressionistically designed silent film; the study of a philistine bourgeoisie was based on two stories by Gogol. "
"" The Coat "(1926) was an expressionist film adaptation of the Gogol novella."
