Mikhail Romm ( Russian Михаил Ильич Ромм ., Scientific transliteration Mikhail Romm Il'ič ; born January 11 . Jul / 24. January  1901 greg. In Irkutsk ; †  1. November 1971 in Moscow ) was a Soviet film director and screenwriter .

Life

Michail Romm was born in Irkutsk to a Jewish Social Democrat who had been exiled to Siberia . He graduated from high school in 1917 and began studying at the Moscow Academy of Painting , Sculpture and Architecture . During his time at college he fought in the Red Army in the civil war . In 1925 he finished the highest artistic-technical department for sculpture at the Moscow University and continued to work as a sculptor and translator. From 1931 he worked at Mosfilm , where he was artistic director of film production from 1940 to 1943. Between 1942 and 1947 he was director of a theater studio for film actors, and later also director of several successful films such as Nine Days of a Year and the documentary The Ordinary Fascism .
