Vladimir Rostislavowitsch Gardin

Vladimir Gardin ( Russian Владимир Ростиславович Гардин ; born January 6 . Jul / 18th January  1877 greg. In Tver ; † 29. May 1965 in Leningrad ) was a Russian film director and actor. He is one of the pioneers in the Russian film industry .

Life

Gardin is known as a stage actor in adaptations of Russian classics, including the actress and director Vera Komissarshevskaya . In 1913 he turned to the film and began, in co-direction with Jakow Protasanow , with the filming of Tolstoy's works: Anna Karenina (1914), Die Kreutzersonata (1914), War and Peace (1915).

After the October Revolution in 1919 he became the first director of the newly founded Moscow Film School , the world's first film school. In 1921 he directed Hammer und Sichel , an early Soviet propaganda film from the civil war .

His last directorial work was Tsar and Poet (1927); with the beginning of the sound film era Gardin only worked as an actor. His roles won him critical acclaim and in 1947 the title People's Artist of the USSR . He published two volumes of memoirs (1949 and 1952) and another book in 1960.
