Vera Fyodorovna Komissarschewskaja was the daughter of Fyodor Komissarschewski, a tenor at the Mariinsky Theater , and the sister of Theodor Komissarschewski , who was a well-known theater director. At the age of 19 she married Count Muravyov, but kept her family name.

Since 1896 she played at the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. Her greatest triumph was with the role of Nina Tsaretschnaja at the premiere of Chekhov's The Seagull, although the premiere was a spectacular failure for Chekhov.

In 1904 she founded her own theater, which proved very successful in spreading the ideas of Russian symbolism among the aristocracy. In 1906 the theater was directed by Vsevolod Meyerhold , but his idiosyncratic performances led to a break with her the following year.

Vera Komissarshevskaya died of smallpox in 1910 while on tour in Central Asia . For example, her death prompted Alexander Blok to write some poems.

Theaters in St. Petersburg and Novocherkassk ( Drama and Comedy Theater WF Komissarschewskaja ) now bear her name. In 1980 a biographical film was shot in the Soviet Union in which she was played by Natalia Saiko.
