The Sternhausen ( Acipenser stellatus ) or Scherg is a kind of sturgeon . Despite its common German name , it belongs to the genus of the sturgeon ( Acipenser ) and not to that of the Hausen ( Huso ).
features
The back is rust-brown with a blue-black tint. The rest of the body is reddish, with the belly side being white with a slightly silvery sheen. The female becomes up to 220 cm long, but weighs only 68 kg because this fish has an elongated body.
distribution
The Sternhausen lives in the Black Sea , Sea of Azov and in the Caspian Sea and its tributaries. It has also rarely been caught in the Adriatic Sea (near Zadar ), in the Mariza river and in the Aral Sea . The Sternhausen used to live on the Danube as far as Pressburg . Today he can no longer ascend the river because of the dam at the Iron Gate in Romania.
Ways of life
The Sternhausen is a migratory fish , which in turn distinguishes between the summer and winter forms. The summer form remains for spawning in the lower reaches of the rivers. It spawns on scree banks in the estuaries in June. The winter form spawns further upstream. It spawns in June through September. The food of the star house consists of insect larvae, crabs and small fish.
