geography
Geographical location
The area is located in west-central Kazakhstan. In the south it borders on the Aral Sea , in the north on the Ural provinces of Russia . Most of the area is covered by a plain traversed by rivers, while the Mugodscharberg Mountains extend in the middle . The highest mountain is the Great Baktybai with 657 m . The western part of the area is occupied by the Poduralski plateau , which merges into the Pre-Aspic Lowlands in the southwest ; in the southeast there are massifs of sand - the Aral-Karakum and the Big and Small Barsuki . The gorge- rich Turgai plateau begins in the northeast .
Flora and fauna
The northwestern part of the area is covered with feather grass and wormwood, in the floodplains there is meadow vegetation, poplar, aspen and birch groves and shrubs. The area has large rodent populations ( steppe lemmings , ground squirrels and jerboa ). The predators include wolves and steppe foxes . Saiga and goitered gazelle live here . The 348,000 hectare Turgai protected area is located in the Aqtöbe area. It is on the list of internationally significant water and swamp areas. The lakes and adjacent marshland cover an area of 40,000 hectares. The importance of the protected area is explained by its location on one of the most important migratory bird routes. 29 species of mammals, eleven species of fish and 170 species of birds live in the protected area, thirty of which are on the Kazakhstani Red List. The huge reed fields offer protection to wild boars , muskrats romp around in the lakes . But water birds are particularly numerous. In autumn and spring the lakes are covered with a thick veil of flocks of birds. Gray geese , many species of ducks, coots , herons , cormorants and sandpipers nest here . Of the species entered in the Red List, whooper swan , spoonbill , brown ibis , Dalmatian pelican , sand-winged grouse , young crane , steppe eagle , sea eagle , osprey and oar duck nest here . Are to meet and Bewick's swans , flamingos , Red-breasted , bustards , falcons and rare monk cranes . The waters are very important for fishing. Commercial fishing is strictly forbidden in the nest building and breeding season from April 15th to September 1st.
