Shem ( Kazakh Жем ) is a city in western Kazakhstan .

Schem is located in the Aktobe area and on the Trans-Aral Railway .

history
The place was founded in 1960 as the administrative center of a Soviet anti-aircraft test site under the name Emba-5 (Эмба-5) and was granted city rights in 1967. The test site, where S-300W , 9K330 Tor , 2K22 Tunguska and Buk M1 were tested, has been closed since 1999. The city has had its current name since 1999.
