Presidential election in Kyrgyzstan 2011

The 2011 presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan took place on October 30th of that year. These were the first ordinary elections since the overthrow of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev in April 2010 and the pogroms in southern Kyrgyzstan in June of the same year. With the election, the transitional government of Kyrgyzstan should be replaced.

Candidates

83 candidates have registered. The “President of the Transitional Period”, Rosa Otunbajewa , could not be re-elected.

The best chances were attributed to the head of government Almasbek Atambayev ( Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan ), the leader of the party Ata-Shurt Kamchibek Tashiev and the former parliamentary president Adachan Madumarow of Butun Kyrgyzstan .

Result

Almasbek Atambayev was elected in the first ballot with 63.2% of the vote.

International observers - including the OSCE - praised the election as fair and free. At the same time, however, the OSCE criticized the “significant irregularities” in the counting of votes. The defeated main candidates of the opposition, Madumarov and Tashiev, therefore refused to recognize Atambayev's victory.
