Constitutional referendum in Kyrgyzstan in 1998

A constitutional referendum was held in Kyrgyzstan on October 17, 1998.

There were a total of 2,277,592 registered voters and the referendum was passed.

Constitutional amendments

The main provisions of the referendum were land reform - that is, the introduction of private land ownership for the citizens of Kyrgyzstan; Change the distribution of seats and the redistribution of seats in the parliament of two chambers, increasing the number of seats in the Legislative Assembly ( Zhogorku Kengesch ) from 35 to 60 and the decline in the number of seats in the People's Representative Assembly ( Assembly of People's Representatives ) from 70 to 45, changes in budgetary policy - removal of the right of members of parliament to change the state budget without the approval of the government, freedom of the press - determination of the increase in free independent media in Kyrgyzstan; Restricting immunity, i.e. limiting the level of legal immunity conferred on MPs in parliament, in order to stop corruption.
