- Budapest / Hungary : The controversial new constitution comes into force. It extends the powers of the government to the detriment of the parliamentary representatives. Furthermore, the official name of Hungary changes from Magyar Köztársaság ( German Republic of the Magyars ) to Magyarország ( German Land of the Magyars ).
- Guimarães / Portugal , Maribor / Slovenia : Both cities are European Capitals of Culture 2012 .
- Copenhagen / Denmark : Denmark takes over the EU Council Presidency for six months and, as a result of the Lisbon Treaty, shares the EU Presidency with Herman Van Rompuy , who has been President of the European Council since December 1, 2009 .
- Mar del Plata / Argentina : Start of the fourth edition of the Dakar Rally in South America .
- New York / United States : Azerbaijan , Guatemala , Morocco , Pakistan and Togo are new non-permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations .

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Mario Draghi , President of the European Central Bank , appoints Belgian financial expert Peter Praet as the new chief economist of the ECB .
- Majuro / Marshall Islands : Parliament elects Christopher Loeak as President with 21 to 11 votes , while the current incumbent Jurelang Zedkaia receives 10 votes.

- Kingston , Jamaica : Portia Simpson Miller is sworn in as Prime Minister one week after her People's National Party won the general election .

- Bischofshofen / Austria : The Austrian ski jumper Gregor Schlierenzauer wins the Four Hills Tournament for the first time in his career .
- Saarbrücken / Germany : The Saarland Prime Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer declares the end of the first nationwide Jamaica coalition at state level , which has existed since 2009 .

- Chemnitz / Germany : Peter Weck receives the folk music crown . The award ceremony will take place for the last time.
- Rostock / Germany : The synodals of the three regional churches of the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church , the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of Mecklenburg and the Pomeranian Evangelical Church of the Evangelical Church decide to merge to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Germany .

- Bern , Zurich / Switzerland : Philipp Hildebrand , accused of insider trading , resigns as President of the National Bank .
- Washington, DC / United States : After only a year in office, Barack Obama's White House chief of staff , William M. Daley , announced his resignation.
- Zurich / Switzerland : The Argentine Lionel Messi is elected World Footballer of the Year for the third time in a row , while the Japanese World Champion Homare Sawa is successful in the women’s category .

- Cairo / Egypt : Almost a year after the overthrow of Husni Mubarak , the Islamist - conservative Freedom and Justice Party wins the parliamentary elections with 37.5% of the votes, while the Salafist- Islamist Party of Light is the second strongest party with 27.8% the future popular assembly will.

- Paris / France : Almost 18 years after the genocide in Rwanda , an investigation report comes to the conclusion that the then President Juvénal Habyarimana was killed by a rocket from his own camp, which immediately led to the genocide.
- Baton Rouge / United States : Biologists led by Christopher Austin from Louisiana State University announce the discovery of the frog Paedophryne amauensis in Papua New Guinea , one of the smallest known vertebrates in the world.
- Berlin / Germany : The bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff declares his singing career over for health reasons.
