Anote Tong

Anote Tong (born June 11, 1952 in Tabuaeran ) was President of Kiribati from July 10, 2003 to March 11, 2016 .

Life

Tong won the 2003 election with a weak majority of 47.4%. The opposition accused him of electoral fraud, but the High Court objected.

He was unable to enforce the maintenance of the People's Republic of China's satellite base promised during the election because he resumed diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China then cleared the facility.

Elected in 2007 for a second term of office with 64% of the votes, he was re-elected to the third term of office on January 13, 2012 with just over 42% of the votes. On January 17, 2012, he appointed his third cabinet .

In March 2016, Tong was replaced as President by Taneti Mamau .
