Teatao Teannaki

Teatao Teannaki ( 1936 - October 11, 2016 ) was a politician of Kiribati origin.

Life

Before Teannaki was named Vice President under then- head of state Ieremia Tabai in early 1979 , he was a member of the House of Assembly of Kiribati , the Kiribati parliament . In addition to this office, he also held the position of Minister of the Interior until 1987 . Between 1987 and 1991 he was Minister of Finance .

In 1991 he inherited Iremia Tabai as head of state of Kiribati. Teannaki held this office until October 1, 1994, when he lost the election of President Teburoro Tito, who later became President.

Despite his electoral defeat, Teannaki remained chairman of his party, the National Progressive Party of Kiribati .

He was Speaker of Parliament from February 2016 until his death.
