Taneti Maamau (born September 16, 1960 in Onotoa ), in more recent spelling also Taaneti Maamau , is a Kiribati politician .

Life

As the successor to Anote Tong , who was not allowed to run again after three terms in office, Maamau has been President of Kiribati since March 11, 2016. Under Teburoro Tito (1994-2003) he was Minister of Finance. Maamau, who belongs to the Tobwaan Kiribati Party (TKP), won the presidential election in Kiribati in 2016 with 19,833 votes, around 60%, and prevailed against Rimeta Beniamina in 16 of 23 constituencies .

On March 18, 2016, he swore in ten ministers in his 12-member cabinet .
