Onotoa is an atoll in the Pacific archipelago of the Gilbert Islands and belongs to the state of Kiribati . It is located approx. 65 km northwest of Tamana , the smallest island in the archipelago.
geography
The atoll has its islands strung together on the east side, while the lagoon on the west side is bordered by coral reefs . The largest islands are Otoae (Otowae, Otoeie) in the southeast and Buariki ( Tanyah ) in the northeast, with four and two villages respectively. Between these two are three small, uninhabited islands: Abanekeneke , Naan Tabuariki and Abeiningan . The road that connects the two largest islands runs across these islands. The third inhabited island, Tabuarorae with the village of the same name, forms the southern tip of the atoll.

Modern times and infrastructure
Local issues are regulated by an Onotoa Island Council . Onotoa sends two members of parliament to the Maneaba ni Maungatabu parliament in South Tarawa ; Taaneti Mamau and Kouraiti Beniato were elected for the 10th parliament 2011–2015 .
Onotoa has three elementary schools and five medical centers. The population, I-Onotoa , lives from subsistence farming , the main source of income is copra production, which, according to the Kiribati Statistical Office, fell to a total of 70 tons in 2010. The waters off Onotoa are affected by illegal commercial fishing.
The atoll can be reached by plane via the Onotoa airfield at the northern tip , which is served by Air Kiribati .
