Maiana is an atoll of the central Gilbert Islands of the state of Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean north of the equator and is 28 km south of the main atoll Tarawa .
geography
The northern and eastern sides of the atoll are formed by a single island. The western boundary of the lagoon is a coral reef . The atoll is 14 km long and 9.5 km wide.
In the northern part of the lagoon are the uninhabited islands of Bikenmamara , Bikentiroi , Bikentunua and the inhabited island of Tebikerai Island with the town of Tebikerai ; in the southern part of the lagoon the uninhabited islands of Bikenibuni , Bikeningako , Tekatoka , Bakanikarau , Nanuteute , Tuakiri , Abaokoro , Bikentiang , Arinnanona and the southernmost islet of the atoll, Toiaki Island .
On the east side of the narrow reef there are numerous fish traps .

According to the 2010 census , the atoll was home to 2027 people, who were spread across twelve settlements.

history
The first inspection took place on June 17, 1788 by Thomas Gilbert , the captain of the convict transporter Charlotte of the First Fleet .
In the middle of the 19th century Maiana was included in the conquest of the "Kingdom of Abemama" by the chief ( Uea ) King Tem Karotu and was tribute to King Tem Binoka (Tembinok ').
After the British colonial era, Maiana formed the Central Gilbert Islands administrative district with Kuria , Abemama , Aranuka and Nonouti .
Modern times
The local administrative authority is the Island Council .
Maiana sends two members of parliament to the Maneaba ni Maungatabu parliament in South Tarawa : in addition to the non-party politician Teiwaki Areieta , the atoll inhabitants who call themselves I-Maiana are also represented by the current President of the Republic of Kiribati, Anote Tong .
traffic
Maiana is served by the state airline Air Kiribati as scheduled . The airfield Maiana Airport is located in the northern part of the atoll, 250 meters from the places Tekaranga and Temantantongo removed.
On July 13, 2009, a ferry from Tarawa capsized shortly before reaching Maiana, killing 33 people.
