Nonouti ( Kiribati pronunciation: [ ˈnonɔus ]) is an atoll in the southern part of the Pacific archipelago of the Gilbert Islands near the equator and administrative district of the state of Kiribati . It is 38 km north of Tabiteuea and about 250 km south of the main atoll of Tarawa . The name Nonouti means “to get up early to go fishing”, the locals call themselves I-Nonouti .

The atoll looks like a sloping oval, the long axis of which runs from northwest to southeast. The islands of this atoll are on the eastern side. On the northwest side of the atoll is the island of Noumatong , which is under special protection as a bird reserve. With a length of 35 km and a width of 15 km, the atoll is the third largest in the group of Gilbert Islands.

history

The atoll has the largest meeting house ( maneaba ) in Kiribati in Taboiaki village . This is also where the first Catholic mission station was founded in the 1880s.

After the British colonial period, Nonouti formed the Central Gilbert Islands administrative district with Aranuka , Kuria , Maiana and Abemama .

Modern times and infrastructure

The administrative center of the atoll is located in Matang on the largest island in the atoll. The former President of Kiribati, Ieremia Tabai is from Nonouti. A Nonouti Island Council regulates local issues .

Nonouti sends two members of parliament to the Maneaba ni Maungatabu parliament in South Tarawa , and Ieremia Tabai and Waysang Mosi Kumkee were elected for the 10th parliament 2011–2015 .

There are seven elementary schools on Nonuti, as well as a middle school and the private George Eastman High School , which is funded by the Kiribati Protestant Church.

The island can be reached by plane via the Nonouti airfield .
