history
Abemama became known through the declaration of the British Protectorate by Captain Davis from the ship Royalist on May 27, 1892. In 1889 Robert Louis Stevenson lived here. Near the place Tabontebike is the grave of the tyrant ruler Tem Binoka (also in the spelling Tembinok '), who became famous through Stevenson's novella In the South Seas .
During the Second World War, Abemama was under Japanese occupation and was liberated by the Americans in the Pacific War in 1943 .
After the Second World War, Abemama stood next to Tarawa as the new administrative center of the colony, but because of the better port conditions, the choice fell on South Tarawa .
Modern times
The local administrative authority is the Island Council .
Abemama sends two members of parliament to the Maneaba ni Maungatabu parliament in South Tarawa : in addition to the politician Tiarite Tioti Kwong , the atoll inhabitants who call themselves I-Abemama are also represented by Willie Tokataake .
