Aranuka (formerly also known under the names Henderville , Nonouki or Starbuck ) is an atoll of Kiribati , just north of the equator in the Gilbert Islands archipelago . In 2010 it had 1,057 inhabitants; this is 1% of the Kiribati population. An Island Council regulates internal affairs .

geography

The ground plan of the atoll corresponds roughly to an isosceles triangle , which is mainly formed by two islands, which are very large for an atoll of this size. The largest island is Buariki in the south-east, which forms the " base " of the triangle. The smaller island, Takaeang, forms the northwest corner of the triangle. The islands are connected to each other on the north side by a long sand bank and on the south-west side by a coral reef . The coral reef has a fairly large gap through which one can get into the lagoon in the interior of the atoll. The land area of the atoll is 11.61 km². The northwestern Kuria Atoll also has an island called Buariki.

history

The first sighting is attributed to the captains of the First Fleet Thomas Gilbert with the ship Charlotte and John Marshall on the Scarborough 1788 on the voyage from Port Jackson, but they did not explore the island.

In the second half of the 19th century, Aranuka, like Kuria, was annexed by the chief Tem Karotu from Abemama at the time of the "Kingdom of Abemama" , and they formed a common territory. The rule passed to the nephew Tem Karotus, the king Tem Binoka , also called Tembinok '.

Modern times

After the British colonial era, Aranuka formed the Central Gilbert Islands administrative district with Kuria, Maiana , Abemama and Nonouti .

Aranuka sends a member of parliament to the Maneaba ni Maungatabu parliament in South Tarawa , and Martin Moreti was elected to the 10th parliament 2011–2015 .

traffic

The Aranuka Airport is located at the northern end of the island Buariki and run by the state-owned airline Air Kiribati served.
