Thomas Gilbert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Gilbert was an eighteenth-century Royal Navy captain . In 1788 he carried out one of the convict transports that took place between Botany Bay ( Australia ) and Canton in China in the Pacific with his ship Charlotte, which belongs to the First Fleet, and with Captain John Marshall and his ship Scarborough .

On June 17, 1788 he sighted the atolls Aranuka , Kuria , Abaiang and on June 20, 1788 Tarawa from the Gilbert Islands . They were given this name in his honor around 1820 from Admiral Adam Johann von Krusenstern and from Captain Louis Isidore Duperrey , although Gilbert had neither discovered nor explored the islands. Today they form the island nation of Kiribati .
