Kuria (formerly also: Woodle's Island ) is an atoll with two islands in the north of the equator of the central Gilbert Islands in the archipelago of today's Kiribati state in the Pacific . It lies northwest of the Aranuka Atoll.

geography

The two islands of the atoll, Buariki and Oneeke , are only separated from each other by a 20 meter wide channel (low water area Te breeti ), which was previously spanned by a bridge. Today they are connected by the 10 meter long dam, the Itintoa Causeway . Due to the interruption of the water passage of the habitat has been Hornhechte ( Rynchorhamphus Georgia ) impaired, which are no longer available in coastal regions, thus fishing.

The islands are surrounded by a coral reef that is wider on the east side than on the west side. The atoll has no lagoon due to its shape, similar to two triangles that touch with the tips . The reef covers 13.02 km² on a base of 12.7 km². Both islands have smaller boat channels through the reef.

The land area is 15.48 km². The main island is Buariki with the main town of the same name. The neighboring Aranuka also has an island with the common name Buariki. In the north of Oneeke and in the south of Buariki there are brackish water fish farms, the King's Fish Ponds .

population

According to the 2010 census, 980 people live on both islands in six settlements, which make up just under 1% of the Kiribati population.

history

The first sighting is attributed to the captains of the First Fleet Thomas Gilbert with the ship Charlotte and John Marshall on the Scarborough 1788 on the voyage from Port Jackson, but they did not explore the islands.

At the time of the "Kingdom of Abemama" in the second half of the 19th century, Kuria was annexed by the chief Tem Karotu from Abemama , which formed a common territory with Aranuka , which was also conquered . The rule passed to the nephew Tem Karotus, the king Tem Binoka , also called Tembinok '.

Kuria was the seat of the first British colonial administrator for the central and southern Gilbert Islands, George Mac Ghie Murdoch , whose grave can still be visited today.

Modern times

After the colonial period, Kuria formed the Central Gilbert Islands administrative district with Maiana , Abemama, Aranuka and Nonouti .

Local issues are regulated by a Kuria Island Council based in Bouatoa.

Kuria sends a member of parliament to the Kiribati parliament Maneaba ni Maungatabu in South Tarawa ; Tom Murdoch was elected for the 10th parliament 2011–2015 .

traffic

Kuria Airport , which is located near the town of Buariki, is served by the state airline Air Kiribati on a regular basis. There are shipping connections to the main Kiribati port of Betio in South Tarawa .
