Air Kiribati is the national airline of Kiribati , based in South Tarawa and based at Bonriki Airport .

history

Air Kiribati was founded on April 1st, 1995 as a state company and future successor to the national airline Air Tungaru . When it ceased flight operations in July 1996, the new company took over a Britten-Norman Trislander and a CASA C-212 from its predecessor, with which it began operations. The company put the first Harbin Y-12 into service in 1997 as a replacement for the Britten-Norman Trislander. In August 1997, Air Kiribati entered into a cooperation with the US American Aloha Airlines , which on their behalf flew to Cassidy Airport on the Kiritimati island of Kiribati once a week from Honolulu ( Hawaii ) until April 26, 2004 .

To accommodate international scheduled flights from Bonriki to Nadi ( Fiji ), Funafuti ( Tuvalu ) and Majuro ( Marshall Islands ) the Company from June 2002. rented an ATR 72-200 in wetlease of Air Tahiti which to spring 2004 was used. Our Airline then flew the connection to Nadi once a week from November 7, 2009 to August 1, 2014 on behalf of Air Kiribati with a Boeing 737-300 . At the beginning of 2009, the company's own fleet consisted of a Britten-Norman Trislander, two CASA C-212s and a Harbin Y-12. In the same year, the Kiribati government stopped funding the state-owned company. Since then, society has had to break even.

On August 30, 2012, Air Kiribati had signed a purchase agreement for two used De Havilland Canada DHC-6-300 Twin Otters with the US aircraft dealer CAAMS and committed to trade in their last CASA 212. She received the first DHC-6 on July 23, 2013. However, at that time the CASA 212 was in an unfit for air condition due to corrosion damage and could not be transported to the USA. CAAMS then did not deliver the second Twin Otter in spring 2014. Flight operations continued with the DHC-6 and the Harbin Y-12, and two more Y-12s were added to the fleet in the following years.

In March 2017, the company entered into a cooperation with Solomon Airlines , which set up a codeshare connection from Bonriki via Honiara ( Solomon Islands ) to Brisbane ( Australia ) for the company on August 30, 2017 . On October 30, 2017, Air Kiribati took over a DHC-8-100 , which it initially used on domestic routes. At the same time, the Republic of Taiwan announced that it wanted to purchase an aircraft from the Airbus A320 family for Air Kiribati , which should be delivered to the company in the first half of 2018. This was not realized.

On March 21, 2018 Air Kiribati started international scheduled flights to Funafuti ( Tuvalu ) with the DHC-8 . In the summer of 2018, there were flight cancellations because two of the three Harbin Y-12s were temporarily unfit to air due to corrosion damage. In December 2018, the company ordered two brand- new Embraer E190-E2s and secured options for two more aircraft of this type. The delivery of the first Embraer E190-E2 was performed on December 30, 2019. With the operation of the aircraft has Air Kiribati society Pionair Australia commissioned.

Destinations

Air Kiribati operates two separate national route networks: it flies from Bonriki and Tabiteuea to 14 destinations on the Gilbert Islands and Canton on the Phoenix Islands . In addition, a second national route network is maintained on the Line Islands some 3,250 kilometers away from the Gilbert Islands . There, the company has been connecting the islands of Kiritimati , Tabuaeran and Teraina from Cassidy Airport since 2016 . Air Kiribati also operates national charter services , medical transport and search flights .

International liner services from Bonriki Airport to Brisbane ( Australia ) and Honiara ( Solomon Islands ) have been flown in codeshare by Solomon Airlines since August 30, 2017 . Funafuti in Tuvalu is the only international route that Air Kiribati serves itself from Bonriki.
