Funafuti International Airport ( German  Internationaler Flughafen Funafuti ) is the international airport of Funafuti in Tuvalu . It is located on the eastern edge of the village of Vaiaku .

The airport is currently (as of April 2015) only served by Fiji Airways from Suva ( Fiji ).

Infrastructure and facilities

Funafuti International Airport has a paved runway with a length of 1524 meters and a width of 45 meters. This has no lighting, so that air traffic can only be carried out during the day. The track was initially paved on the basis of corals and has an eight centimeter thick coral layer with a maximum two centimeter thick asphalt layer . This was last given a new surface in 1992. Due to inadequate maintenance, the maximum landing and take-off weight of the aircraft was reduced from 50 to 20 tons . In November 2013, the World Bank approved more than six million US dollars for the maintenance and expansion of the airport according to international standards.

The airport has one terminal .

history

First, in 1943 - during the Second World War - a military airfield was built by the Seabees , a construction battalion of the US Navy . From there attacks on Japanese units in the area of Tarawa and the Gilbert Islands were flown. When the front shifted further north during the course of the war, American troops gradually withdrew until 1945. After the war, the airport was used for civilian purposes.
