Vaiaku is one of the seven villages on the island of Fongafale , the main island of the Funafuti Atoll , and one of the four structurally merged villages in the central section of Fongafale, which together form the Funafuti Center .

Vaiaku is often referred to as the capital of Tuvalu as this is where the government building, all ministries, the Supreme Court and the seat of the Prime Minister are located. The actual capital, however, is the entire Funafuti Atoll as a municipality .

Vaiaku has 682 inhabitants, while Fongafale's total population is 6006 (as of 2012 census). The only attraction is the 14 km wide and 18 km long lagoon on which the village is located.

In addition to the government buildings, Vaiaku is also home to the only bank, the main post office, the Tuvalus National Stadium and the building of the Tuvalu Telecommunications Company . In addition, the Vaiaku Lagi Hotel is one of the few hotels in the country. Vaiaku has Funafuti International Airport .
