Fongafale is the largest and with 6006 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) most populous island in the Funafuti atoll and the state of Tuvalu .

With the airport Funafuti is the only international airport in the country is on Fongafale well with the Princess Margaret Hospital , the only hospital in the country. There are seven small lakes, of which the Pond is the largest. Fongafale has four centrally located villages that cannot be clearly delimited from one another. Together these form the so-called Funafuti Center . Two other villages are in the north and one in the south.

Vaiaku is the main village where all government buildings are also located.

The Vaiaku Lagi Hotel in Vaiaku is the only Tuvalus hotel on Fongafale . It has 16 rooms. There are also several guest houses on Fongafale, including the Militano Lodge, Filamona Moonlight Lodge and Wasmasiri Lodge.
