The Tourism in Tuvalu plays a subordinate economic role. Despite the typical South Seas - flair with palm trees and sandy beaches to visit in absolute terms few travelers Tuvalu .

Tourism for Tuvalu is organized by the Pacific Islands Trade & Invest ("Timeless Tuvalu"), a company under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Environment . There is a tourist information office at Funafuti Airport .

Tuvalu was visited by 1000 travelers in 2014. This means a decrease of a good 17 percent compared to 2011. This makes Tuvalu the least visited country on earth . Only 258 people traveled to Tuvalu as tourists . 2000 travelers were statistically recorded for 2017.

Most travelers come from Fiji , around 25 percent , followed by around 10 to 15 percent each from Japanese , Australians and New Zealanders . Between 2004 and 2011, between 14 and 32 travelers came from Germany each year .

Arrival and transport

Most travelers reach Tuvalu on the twice-weekly scheduled flight with Fiji Airways from Suva , the capital of Fiji . Funafuti also has a small port where private yachts moor.

Infrastructure and sights

Funafuti

Funafuti is the main atoll, municipality and capital of Tuvalu . All six accommodations in the country as well as Funafuti International Airport are located on the main island of Fongafale .

In addition to the philately office, the Funafuti Conservation Area , a marine reserve in the west of the atoll, is worth seeing . The diving spots of Tuvalu are among the best in the world. Cultural festivals as well as sporting events of the national sport Te Ano (such as the ball ) and Kilikiti (a type of cricket ) are also popular with travelers. A well-preserved bunker from the Second World War can be found on the islet of Tepuka . One of the most famous sights is David's Drill , a borehole used by the Royal Society of London to determine the structure of coral reefs .

On Fongafale is the Vaiaku Lagi Hotel is the only hotel in the country. There are also 12 to 16 guest houses, including the Militano Lodge, Filamona Moonlight Lodge and Wasmasiri Lodge.

Other atolls and islands

On Nanumea and Nukufetau there are ruins of the US air force bases , including a runway and military aircraft from World War II. The caves on Nanumanga are worth seeing.

Tourist accommodation is currently only available on Vaitupu . Another accommodation for travelers outside of Fongafale is planned on Fualifeke (Fualafeke).
